If you're expecting a baby and considering newborn photography in Cambridge, you may be wondering what actually happens during a newborn session. When should you book? What if your baby doesn't sleep? What should everyone wear? And perhaps most importantly, will you need to somehow arrive with a perfectly settled newborn?

The good news is, you don't need to.

Newborn sessions are designed around your baby, with plenty of time for feeding, cuddles, settling and all the little things newborns need. My aim is to make the experience feel relaxed and unhurried while creating beautiful, timeless photographs of this incredibly fleeting stage.

As a Cambridge newborn photographer, I've photographed hundreds of babies over the years, and every one of them has been different. Here's what you can expect when you book your newborn photography session with White Locket Photography.

When should I book my newborn photography session?

Ideally, you'll book your newborn session while you're still pregnant.

Because babies rarely arrive exactly when expected, I reserve space around your due date rather than trying to predict the exact day we'll photograph your baby. Once your little one arrives, we'll confirm your session date.

Booking during pregnancy also means there's one less thing to organise once you're home with your new baby.

If your baby has already arrived and you haven't booked, please don't worry. You're always welcome to get in touch. If I have availability, I'll do my best to fit you in.

When is the best time for newborn photos?

Newborn sessions are often photographed during the first few weeks after birth

The ideal window I have found is between 5-12 days old, when babies are still wonderfully sleepy, curled up and displaying all those tiny newborn details.

That said, there isn't a magical day when beautiful newborn photographs suddenly stop being possible.

Every baby is different, and your session will be approached according to your baby's age, temperament and individual needs. Older newborns can be beautifully photographed too, so please don't feel you've "missed your chance" if those first few weeks have disappeared in a newborn haze.

What happens when we arrive?

My newborn photography studio is based in Cambridge, Waikato and has been created to make your session as comfortable and relaxed as possible.

There's no expectation that you'll walk through the door with a sleeping baby.

Your little one might need a feed. They might need changing. They may decide that sleep is absolutely not on the agenda that morning.

That's all completely normal.

We'll take our time and follow your baby's cues throughout the session. There is space for feeding, settling and cuddles, and there's no pressure to rush through the experience.

You're welcome to simply settle in while I take care of the photography.

What if my baby won't sleep?

This is one of the most common worries parents have before their newborn session.

Please don't worry.

Your baby does not have to sleep for the entire session to create beautiful photographs. Awake photographs can be just as special, particularly when we capture those little expressions and moments of connection with you.

I've been photographing newborns for many years and am very used to babies who need extra feeding, cuddling or settling.

Your baby leads the session, not the clock.

Do I need to bring anything?

You don't need to arrive with a suitcase full of props.

You don't need to arrive with a suitcase full of props.

My Cambridge newborn studio has everything we need to create the soft, timeless style you see throughout my newborn portfolio.

Before your session, I'll also guide you through anything I'd like you to bring and help you prepare so you know exactly what to expect.

The focus of my newborn photography is always your baby and your family rather than elaborate props or trends. I want the photographs we create to feel just as beautiful hanging in your home years from now as they do today.

What should we wear for newborn photos?

Keep it simple.

Soft, neutral tones photograph beautifully and help keep the attention on your baby and the connection between you.

Think creams, whites, oatmeal, dusty pinks, soft earthy colours and gentle textures rather than large logos, bold patterns or very bright colours.

Most importantly, you should still feel like yourself.

I'll provide guidance before your session so you don't have to stand in front of your wardrobe wondering whether anything works and you are also welcome to borrow a dress for the Mother from my Client Wardrobe.

Can parents and siblings be included?

Absolutely.

Your new baby may be the reason for your session, but these photographs are about your whole family.

I love capturing the beautiful connection between siblings, from proud cuddles and gentle kisses to those wonderfully imperfect little moments that happen naturally.

And if your toddler has their own ideas on the day, that’s perfectly okay. We’ll keep things relaxed, follow their lead and create beautiful photographs that feel like them.

These are often the images that become more precious with time.

What if I don't feel camera-ready after having a baby?

Please be in the photographs

You don't need to feel completely like yourself yet. You don't need to lose weight, have perfect hair or wait until you feel "ready."

Your baby will never look at these photographs and notice the things you were worrying about.

They'll see you.

They'll see the way you held them, how tiny they once were against you and how loved they were from the very beginning.

I'll gently guide you throughout the session so you don't need to know how to pose or what to do in front of the camera.

How long does a newborn photography session take?

our Newborn sessions are intentionally unhurried.

On average a session is around 3 hours, they can be shorter or longer depending on what happens.

Rather than expecting a tiny baby to work to a strict schedule, we allow time for everything that naturally happens with a newborn: feeding, changing, settling, cuddling and sometimes simply waiting.

That breathing room is an important part of the experience.

I want you to remember your newborn session as something you enjoyed, not something you had to survive.

What style of newborn photography do you offer?

My newborn photography is timeless, beautifully styled and created especially for you.

I love designing each newborn session around the colours, textures and details you’re drawn to. From beautiful props and soft layers to delicate flowers, greenery and carefully chosen accessories, every element is thoughtfully brought together to create something that feels personal to you and your family.

Before your session, I’ll find out what colours and styles you love, as well as where you might display your photographs in your home. Whether you’re drawn to soft neutrals, rich earthy tones, pretty florals or something with a little more colour, I’ll style your session to reflect what you love while keeping your beautiful new baby at the heart of every image.

Alongside the styled portraits, I’ll capture those tiny newborn details that change far too quickly, from curled-up fingers and toes to wispy hair, sleepy expressions and all the little features that make your baby uniquely yours.

The result is a beautiful and varied collection of photographs, thoughtfully created to tell the story of this fleeting stage and become treasured artwork for your home for many years to come.

Where is your newborn photography studio?

Choosing a newborn photographer in Cambridge

When you're choosing your newborn photographer, look beyond individual photographs and consider how you want the entire experience to feel.

Choose someone whose work you genuinely love, but also someone you feel comfortable trusting with your baby and this incredibly personal chapter of your family's story.

Look through full portfolios rather than just a handful of images. Pay attention to consistency, editing style, how babies are photographed and whether the photographer is safety trained. Are the sessions super short and stressful, or are they un-rushed and calm?

Most importantly, choose a photographer whose photographs you can imagine still loving twenty years from now.

Newborn Photography in Cambridge with White Locket Photography

Your baby's newborn stage is extraordinarily brief.

In the middle of feeding, broken sleep and adjusting to life as a family, it can be difficult to appreciate just how quickly they're changing.

Then suddenly the newborn clothes don't fit. Their little legs begin to uncurl. Their features change. And that tiny person you brought home somehow doesn't seem quite so tiny anymore.

That's why I love newborn photography.

It gives you something tangible from a chapter that otherwise passes in a blur.
