What is a Fresh 48 Session?
A Fresh 48 session documents the beautiful first hours of your baby’s life.... usually within the first two days after birth. These sessions are relaxed, natural and storytelling-focused, capturing all the tiny details you never want to forget: little fingers, wrinkly toes, first cuddles, and those emotional early family moments.
Babies change incredibly quickly in the first few days, which makes this a truly special time to document.
When Will the Session Take Place?
Fresh 48 sessions are typically held during daylight hours, as natural light creates soft, timeless images.
The ideal session time is usually between mid-morning and mid-afternoon, when:
- natural light is strongest
- baby is often settled after feeds
- parents feel a little more rested
Birth rarely follows a schedule, so flexibility is key. We’ll confirm timing once baby has arrived and everyone is ready.
Lighting & Your Hospital or birth Room
Hospital and Birth Centre lighting can create strong colour casts and harsh shadows, so we’ll mainly use natural window light.
To help prepare:
- Open window blinds or curtains where possible
- Turn off overhead lights if permitted
- Keep the space simple and uncluttered
If natural light is limited, I may use gentle bounced flash lighting to keep everything looking soft and natural.
Feeding Baby Before the Session
A content baby makes for a calm and relaxed session.
You may wish to:
- Feed baby shortly before the session so they are settled and sleepy
- Let me know if you would like feeding or breastfeeding images included, these can be photographed beautifully and respectfully at the beginning of the session
There is absolutely no rush. Baby-led timing always comes first.
Keep the Room Warm
Newborns are happiest when warm and cosy.
If possible:
- Increase the room temperature slightly before the session
- Have extra blankets nearby
A warm environment allows us to capture natural images, including wrapped or lightly clothed baby portraits.
What Should You Wear?
Comfort is the priority.....you’ve just given birth!
Some parents choose to remain in their hospital gown, while others prefer a robe, nightwear, or comfortable outfit. Both photograph beautifully.
Helpful tips:
- Choose soft, neutral or light colours
- Avoid busy patterns or large logos
- Flowy, relaxed clothing tends to photograph best
- Partners and siblings should wear simple, coordinating outfits
Most importantly: wear something you feel comfortable in.
Embrace the Hospital & Birth center Environment
Fresh 48 sessions are about authenticity.
Hospital blankets, bassinets, wristbands and tiny hats are all part of your baby’s birth story. These details help tell the full story of those first hours together and are often treasured later.
You’re also welcome to bring:
- special swaddles
- announcement outfits
- family heirlooms
- personalised blankets or accessories
We can photograph a mix of hospital moments and personal touches.
What Will Be Photographed?
Every session is unique, but typically includes:
- close-up details (hands, feet, eyelashes, hair)
- baby in the bassinet or hospital bed
- cuddles with parents
- sibling introductions
- quiet connection moments
- natural family interactions
You are welcome to share any specific images or moments you’d love captured.
How Long Does a Fresh 48 Session Last?
Fresh 48 sessions are intentionally short and relaxed, usually lasting around 30 minutes.
The goal is to document your story without interrupting important bonding and recovery time.
